PIPA Experience Report – Dr. Francisca Adoma AcheampongCertified engineer and senior lecturer in the Department of Telecommunications Engineering at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr. Francisca Adoma Acheampong specializes in artificial intelligence (AI), natural language processing (NLP), and data science. She has gained recognition for her research on human emotion recognition from text, especially through the use of transformer models like BERT.Notable publications include:Transformer Models for Text-Based Emotion Detection: A Review of BERT-Based ApproachesRecognizing Emotions from Texts Using an Ensemble of Transformer-Based Language ModelsHer research aims to apply AI advancements to local challenges, such as the detection of rare diseases in infants — a project she is currently pursuing.A Strategic Immersion in AI in FranceAs part of the PIPA AI thematic group, Dr. Acheampong participated in several key meetings between February 6 and 11, 2025.Among the highlights of her program was the "AI, Science and Society" summit organized by the Institut Polytechnique de Paris, which deepened her reflections on the intersections of AI, ethics, and society.During the AI Action Summit at the Grand Palais, she attended high-level discussions on global AI governance, focusing on African challenges and regulation strategies.She was also particularly inspired by her visit to the SCAI (Sorbonne Center for Artificial Intelligence) and the scientific discussions with INRIA, which sparked new research ideas—particularly around France’s public data policies.Through this program, I realized that regulations are here not to stifle innovations but rather to enhance innovation.Dr. Acheampong drew three main insights from her visit:Gathering new ideas during conferences and panel discussions.Engaging with other researchers and young AI professionals.Deepening her understanding of the ethical implications for AI researchers and developers.She also emphasized the central role of data in advancing AI in Africa and proposed the creation of national data centers as a key lever for innovation.Watch her full testimony here:
